We were founded in London in 1999, when a small group of strangers connected through an advert in the Pink Paper and came together for the first time to build something that hadn’t existed before: a space where being queer and being Muslim didn’t have to be a contradiction.

For many of our founding members, that first meeting broke years of isolation, the sense of being the only queer Muslim in the room, without a name for what they were feeling or anyone who understood. Imaan grew out of that need: peer-to-peer support, from people who’d lived it themselves.

More than two decades on, we’re still a volunteer-led, grassroots charity (Charity No. 1158977), and our purpose hasn’t changed. We campaign and work so that no LGBTQI Muslim in Britain has to feel excluded from their family, their faith, or their community, and we hold space for people to explore what it means to hold both identities fully, without having to choose.

In 2024, we marked a new chapter by hosting the UK’s first-ever Muslim Pride festival, bringing together scholars, activists and community members for a full day celebrating queer Muslim culture, history and resilience.

Imaan is the UK’s and the world’s oldest LGBTQI+ Muslim organisation.
